Revolving, with a 360-degree view? Check. Windows twenty feet high? Check. Yummy? Double-check.
The Cloud 9 Revolving Restaurant & Lounge sits on the 42nd floor of one of tallest hotels in Vancouver, the Empire Landmark. With views of the harbor, trees and glimmering skyscrapers, this place provides scenery at its tastiest.
Most of the appetizers and entrées are staples of fancy restaurants – calamari, escargot, oysters – but there are also some biggies on the menu that are worth the price. Some examples are the Canadian Certified Angus Striploin with garlic butter sauce; the Mixed Grill with tenderloin, lamb chop, spicy chorizo, tiger prawns, and veggies with a marsala glaze; and “Cloud 9 Gnocchi” in sun-dried tomato pesto cream sauce. The food comes arranged in a way that can only be described as graceful, with sides that are ever-so-deliberately askew. You get what you pay for – in the best way.
Breakfast hours are 6:30-10am, but unfortunately the place doesn’t revolve during brekkie. That starts up at 5pm, when it opens for dinner. The lounge, which sometimes has events or live music (with a $7 cover), stays open a bit later, but under-19s aren’t allowed in.
Keep your meal receipt if you’re thinking of staying the night – diners get discounts!
If you happen to be visiting Vancouver on your birthday, and you’re a Facebooker, friend the restaurant before you go – then make a b-day reservation and they’ll guarantee you get a window seat AND give you a free entrée! (You do have to order other things along with it, though, but free food is always exciting, no?)
Sneaky policy to keep in mind if not everyone is starving: there’s a one-entrée minimum per person, expense-wise, so only go if everyone is up for a feast!
